Healthcare in India
Healthcare in India
India, a country recognized for its warm hospitality and the perfect blend of vibrant art and cultures, is also one of the most preferred countries for medical tourism. The continuously increasing number of multi-specialty hospitals and technologically evolving medical assistance has led India to the list of one of the most favored places for health and medical tourism. India’s healthcare delivery system is categorized into two major components - public and private. The government, i.e., the public healthcare system, comprises limited secondary and tertiary care institutions in key cities and focuses on providing basic healthcare facilities in the form of Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in rural areas.
- Wondering why healthcare tourism in India is so highly spoken of on a global scale?
Healthcare services in India are cost-effective. The low medical cost, alongside superior quality healthcare service, is what makes people from all around the world, fly to India for their treatment. Additionally, India excels with state of the art medical facilities, reputed health care professionals, quality nursing facilities and traditional healthcare therapies.
Additionally, the government is investing extensively in developing new technologies to improve the infrastructure and healthcare services in India. Nations with limited resources or relatively expensive medical facilities are also contributing towards the growth of medical tourism in India.
- Challenges that the healthcare sector is facing
Inadequate infrastructure: The Indian healthcare infrastructure can be categorized into two segments: public and private. Private healthcare in India is good quality but not affordable for the majority of the rural population due to low income and a lack of basic health insurance facilities. On the other hand, the public healthcare system lacks basic infrastructure and digital-led solutions. Rural government hospitals are underserved primarily due to insufficient amenities such as buildings, equipment, instruments and inconsistency in staff.
Technological advancements and Public-private Partnerships (PPP) in the healthcare sector are altering the landscape of the Indian healthcare system. Such enhancements and integrations of medical facilities help with accessibility and help prevent many chronic health conditions through early detection.
- Strategies to improve the healthcare sector
Leveraging technology: Adopting technology, especially AI, can significantly improve the healthcare industry. It can address several problems, such as availability, affordability, and quality of healthcare services. Healthtech firms are developing workable solutions to long-standing healthcare challenges by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), automation, data, and analytics. Technology helps healthcare professionals take prompt action to diagnose and treat health problems.
Telemedicine: Telemedicine has emerged as an essential and cost-effective strategy in the healthtech ecosystem for bridging the gap between rural and urban. Instead of sending patients to faraway locations, high quality medical treatments can be provided through teleconsultation.
Healthcare financing: Health Care Financing focuses on the generation, allocation, and usage of financial resources in the healthcare system. Evaluating the country’s healthcare financing structure allows the identification of existing healthcare resources and potential sources of additional funding.
Government initiatives: Ayushman Bharat is a wide-scale healthcare program. It is a government-led health insurance fund that provides healthcare to millions of individuals who cannot even afford primary healthcare costs. It offers several healthcare services, such as maternity care, vaccinations, treatments, health awareness seminars, telemedicine, and pharmaceutical stores. The Ayushman Bharat program has surpassed the three-crore milestone for hospital admissions, with a total claim value of INR 36,500 million disbursed and over 18 crore cards produced.
- Way forward
The government of India is implementing extensive structural and long-term reforms to boost the healthcare sector, and it intends to increase public spending on healthcare to 2.5% of GDP by 2025. It has also unveiled favourable policies to encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Furthermore, several states have undertaken novel initiatives to improve healthcare infrastructure.
Medical facilities are gradually reaching tier 2, tier 3 cities, and small towns. Healthcare startups are increasingly pursuing licensing and exploring innovative healthcare strategies. The journey of the healthtech ecosystem, earlier riddled with inefficiencies, is becoming better optimized, leading patients to have access to high-quality and affordable treatment.
